NON-SURGICAL EXTRACTION
What is a Non-Surgical Extraction?
Sometimes, you may run into a problem with one of your teeth. Maybe you have an infected, cracked, broken, or decayed tooth that your dentist is unable to save, or maybe you’ve had multiple teeth damaged due to an accident or illness. In this case, your dentist will likely recommend non-surgical extraction. Unlike surgical extraction (like in the case of impacted wisdom teeth), non-surgical tooth extraction involves your dentist simply pulling out the tooth or teeth without having to cut into your gums.
For most people, the process of getting a tooth pulled in a non-surgical extraction is quick and safe. Your dentist will probably give you gauze to bite down on to help stop the bleeding until a blood clot forms. Afterward, they may recommend that you take it easy for a day while the area heals. Do not rinse or vigorously swish or spit for at least 24 hours, and avoid smoking for 24 hours too, as these things can inhibit healing or lead to other complications.
Do Non-Surgical Extractions Hurt?
In most cases, your dentist can perform a non-surgical extraction quickly and easily. They will probably give you a local anesthetic like Novocaine, and you won’t be able to feel any pain. If you have to get many teeth pulled, your dentist may give you heavier anesthesia, so you can rest during the procedure. Though there may be some pain or bleeding after the procedure is finished, it is rarely serious. You can use more gauze to staunch any residual bleeding, and ice or over-the-counter pain medicine can help relieve any discomfort or swelling you experience. And always ask your dentist if there are special procedures you must follow after the extraction.
You will probably want to eat soft foods for a day or two until the area starts to heal and feel better. Grab some of your favorites like pudding, yogurt, applesauce, or soup to keep your energy up. If you have any alarming symptoms like intense pain or bleeding, or signs of infection like fever or chills, get in touch with your dentist right away, as these can be signs of complications. A missing tooth may cause your other teeth to shift in your jaw, so your dentist may recommend that you get an implant placed to prevent other dental issues.
